       Post Vaccine Care for
Your Little One
Vaccinations are very important to protect your child against certain life-threatening diseases1. Children are vulnerable to infections as their immune systems have not developed fully and cannot cope with these infections2.
Post-Vaccination Care & Tips
Below are some common post-vaccination side effects and tips to help manage your child’s discomfort.
| Side Effects | How to Manage |
| Pain, redness or swelling at the site of the vaccination |
 |
| Slight fever |
 |
| Tiredness or poor appetite |
 |
*Weigh your child for accurate dosing. The dosage of paracetamol is 10-15mg/kg of your child’s weight, taken once every 4-6 hours, up to 4 times in 24 hours if needed6. Click on the link here to refer to the children’s dosage guidance.
How Do Vaccines Help?
Vaccines are made from the same viruses or bacterium (or part of them) that cause diseases. However, they are altered (usually weakened or killed) so that they can trigger our immune system to react while not causing illnesses. Our immune systems react the same way it would to the disease by producing antibodies, which remain as part of our body to protect us against the real disease. This ‘immunologic memory’ lasts longer for some vaccines compared to others and re-vaccinations may be required to maintain protection against some diseases1.

Is it Normal to Experience Side Effects from a Vaccine?
Like any medication, your child may experience some mild vaccine-related side effects, which are usually temporary3. It is normal for your child to be more irritable for a few days or suffer from a slight fever that lasts 1-2 days after the injection1. Consult your doctor if high fever persists even after taking medicine4.
When to Call the Doctor
If symptoms persist, please consult a doctor.
